Practice News

WELCOME to our overdue newsletter !

Probably a combination of seasonal increased workload, including the influenza surge of November & December, and the related vaccination drive, along with the prolonged cold weather, has allowed us little free time to provide a surgery update.

A FEW INTERESTING STATISTICS:

1. The national vaccination programme against the new H1N1 (Swine Flu) virus was rapidly introduced as part of the overall response to the emergent influenza pandemic. NHS Scotland reported that General Practice played a crucial role in responding to the burden of acute illness and in the delivery of the vaccination programme. We targeted the “At-risk” groups of patients, and achieved better vaccination coverage in the under-65 age group up to 31/12/09 (53.3% compared to Scotland average of 48.9% and Highland average of 52.2%) and considerably better uptake in the over-65 age group (61.3% compared to Scotland average of 43.6% and Highland average of 49.2%) - Well Done to our vaccination team (reception and clinical), in the surgery, and our community nurses outwith the surgery.

2. You might be interested to know that out of a practice total of around 5200 people, 181 aged 16 years or over have diabetes, and 468 have hypertension (high blood pressure). Both these conditions contribute to heart disease. We (as elsewhere in the developed world) are seeing a surge in new cases of diabetes, mainly Type 2, which in many cases is caused by our western lifestyle with overeating, obesity and lack of exercise. An interesting recent study has shown that UK calorie intake per person is little different from 50 years ago, but activity levels are significantly reduced (few occupations are physical nowadays).

3. Control of blood pressure has been shown to reduce risk of heart disease and strokes. Within the last 9 months, more than 90% of our patients with hypertension have had their BP checked, and more than 70% (considered by NHS as a reasonable target) have their BP well-controlled.

STAFF CHANGES:

Di Cromarty, Practice Nursing Sister, retired on 31st December 2009 after 42 years as a qualified nurse. We wish her well with her plans to spend more time visiting her daughter and grand-children as well as keeping up with her busy swimming and gardening schedules.

Sally Huntington, Practice Receptionist, retired on 5th February 2009, having worked at the surgery since 1986 (with a 6-year gap in the middle). We wish her well with her plans also to spend more time visiting her children and grand-children.

Dr. William Ross has announced his intention to formally retire at 30th April 2010 but will continue to work on a limited basis for a further period of time.

NEW STAFF:

Amanda Keith started work with us in Autumn 2009 as Practice Receptionist, and is fitting into the Fairfield team very well.

Kathryn Henderson brings many years of nursing experience to our team, having worked in GP practices across the Highlands, from Fort Augustus to the Western Isles.

Nicola Macmillan brings youth and experience to our reception team, as well as Health Care Assistant skills.

Nurse Jayne MacPhee has been helping us over the past many months, as maternity cover for Julz Fraser, who will be returning to work with us in a few months time.

February 2010.

11th November 2009: we have been issued with Swine Flu vaccines, and have offered it so far to the 3 highest risk groups of patients (pregnant women, healthcare staff, and children with chronic health problems). If you feel that you are in these categories and have not yet been invited, please ask the receptionist to offer you a date at one of our vaccination clinics. Adults with chronic health problems are eligible for the next batch of swine flu vaccines - please arrange an appointment at the special vaccine clinics in the next several weeks.

1st November 2009: we are continuing Extended Hours, much of which has been mentioned in the popular press.

For our surgery, this involves a number of surgery appointments available to patients (particularly those working out of town and who have difficulty accessing us in normal hours) outwith normal surgery opening times. Please note that we will be unable to offer a full range of services (eg no practice nurse, no health care assistant, reduced availability of blood testing) during these extra sessions.

We are offering a few appointments between 7am & 8am, some betwen 6pm & 7.30pm, and occasionally on Saturday mornings. The surgery will not be open as normal during these times - these are for prebooked appointments only. For ongoing urgent health issues during these hours, please contact NHS24 as you would now on 08454 24 24 24.

At present we believe there is a need for this facility, and that it is helpful for patients, but still not sure if it is sustainable for doctors & staff.

If you have difficulty attending the surgery during normal working hours because of work commitments, please ask our receptionists about an Extended Hours appointment.
